Check out this article on depth of field (shallow and deep)
How does the aperture change the depth of field?Larger apertures, represented on the camera by low f-stops like f/1.4 and f/2.8, let in more light, while smaller apertures like f/16 and f/22 let in less light.
The choice of aperture has much more impact on the look and feel of an image than brightness alone.
Although small apertures let in less light, they offer a wider depth of field.
Landscape and macro photographers routinely use small apertures to get more of the picture to appear as sharp.
Large apertures produce a narrower depth of field, letting you sandwich a sharp subject between a blurred foreground and background.
The closer you are to the foreground, and the more distance there is between the subject and the background, the more pronounced the effect.

PHOTO COMPOSITION
In this final section of Unit 1, You will find some tutorials and task assignments. Photography is an art and a skill. One you learn to have if you know what to look for and really SEE.
Before you begin, think about the following scenario:
You are on vacation and have been given a brand new camera along with a 2 gig memory card. WOW...hundreds (if not thousands) of moments to capture. When you get home, you are so excited about the great pictures that you have taken. You run out to spend cash on printing the photos on photopape (because you know that your grandmother will want to see them). But, when you get them home and look at them you are disappointed. How come? Well, you need to know the basics in photo composition. Your eyes want to see perfection all the time...and are trained to be "bored" with dull photos.
Sound familar. Well have no fear...your assignment is here!
